いっせん【一銭】
one sen (=the hundredth part of a yen, 1/100 yen).

●そんなことをしたって一銭の足しにもならない. Going to all that trouble [Even if you do that, it] won't bring in a penny extra, you know!

●私はそんなお金は一銭たりとも受け取っていない. I haven't received any of that money; not a red cent [《英》 brass farthing], I tell you!

・娘は 4 月から働き始めたが, 家には一銭も入れようとしない. Our daughter has been working since April, but she hasn't offered to contribute a penny to the household.

一銭を笑う者は一銭に泣く He who laughs about one cent wil cry because of one cent. | You shouldn't despise small sums of money [one sen]; you're sure to need them [it] some day.
